The documentary Esencias, La Colmenita en Estados Unidos
or Essences, La Colmenita in the United States by director Roberto Chile.
The film deals with the message of peace, justice and beauty
that the Cuban children’s theater company La Colmenita
took to Washington, DC, New York and San Francisco in
October, 2011, with the pieces Abracadabra and La
Cucarachita Martina.
From the beginning, the 68 minute road movie documentary
takes us into a spectacular adventure in theaters, schools,
subways, parks, streets or institutions, such as the United
Nations headquarters in New York. The film begins in the so
called Big Apple —due to the fact that the entry visa to
director Roberto Chile was delayed by the US State
Department — and deals with the intense emotions gone
through by US audiences and La Colmenita members
.
Rehearsals, sightseeings, the US people’s solidarity with Cuba
and the cause of the Five Cubans unjustly locked in US jails
for fighting terrorism against the two countries are some of
the documentary’s highlights, as well as an encounter with
one of the Cuban Five, René, and his anecdotes.
La Colmenita, directed by Carlos Alberto Cremata, is a
renowned Cuban children’s theater company that has been
named UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador.
